REMEMBER: ESTATES IN THE SNOW CIRCA 1900

                                 Archival photo courtesy AudubonParkNYC

Who can guess the location of this photo of an uptown block circa 1900?  One major clue is that the famous estate houses in the background were still standing at the time so the location was a bit  further north where development was just starting to happen.  The group of brownstones just built in the foreground is actually on a curved road and still stands today but the handsome tall mansard roof to the far left has been altered.  One of the older free standing houses actually stuck around for a few decades thereafter but eventually met its demise when grand, prewar elevator buildings took over this far side of town.
This is basically a view looking east from riverside drive and the older houses are what was know as the Audubon estate. Those newer townhouses still are there and the one with mansard roof was recently up on the market but has been altered: LINK
