SEE: PIECES OF THE PAST ON 116TH STREET

We noticed that the dollar star at the corner of 116th and Lenox took down some plywood recently and a few poster remnants had been exposed on the north side.  They all appear to advertise for the same event from what we can gather and the venue was actually the Manhattan Center on 34th and 8th Avenue in midtown.  After the roaring 20s, some of the jazz scene in Harlem moved to midtown but many of the performers probably still had fans that lived uptown.  The Cotton Club at the original location on Lenox by 142nd Street shut down in 1935 because of riots that deemed the neighbored no longer safe and that storied establishment along with many others would move further down the island by the following year.   More on the actual Cotton Club can be found in our past post: LINK
