Applebee's opened on 125th street back in 2009 and it was a big deal for everyone but now the chain has abruptly closed its first Harlem location. Everything on the facade has been removed and there are signs up on the commercial space at the corner of 5th Avenue mentioning that the restaurant could not renew the lease. Things look pretty gloomy these days for small business with rents that are so high that even a big national corporation can not afford them. One neighbor mentioned that they saw developers already on site in the past week but it is unclear what will happen to the low-rise building.
