REMEMBER: WILLIE MAYS MAYS DRIVE

Harlem Bespoke:  Baseball legend Willie Mays just had a section of the Harlem River Drive at 155th Street named after the living legend but what is the connection with uptown?   The baseball icon actually lived close by on St. Nicholas Avenue and 155th Street when he was with the New York Giants and would walk to the Polo Ground stadium to play each game.  That golden era of sports uptown ended when the arena was torn down in 1963 to make way for public housing but now the main boulevard overlooking the historic spot will have a reference to the past with the honorific that has been bestowed.  More on Willie Mays in modern times can be found in this older Times article: LINK
