ARCHITECTURE: INSIDE UNITED PALACE 2018
Harlem Bespoke: We were invited to tour Manhattan's only Loew's Wonder Theater this week and got to see the fabulously restored interior for the first time. United Palace on Broadway and 175th Street was one of five Wonder Theaters built in greater New York City back in the 1930 and in 2016 was finally made an officially landmark. This ornate fantasy of a movie palace seats 3,400 and is the 4th largest theater in Manhattan but is somewhat of an uptown secret.
Movies had been running at the venue up until 1969 and the United Church eventually purchased Loew's 175th Street for Sunday service and the landmark still functions as a house of worship today. What some may not know is that American Idol finalist Anwar Robinson is the artistic director for the organization and met guests at the evenings tour after a rousing performance to show off the new surround sound system that recently had been installed.
Bob Dylan, Adele, John Legend, Sonic Youth and other notable performers have graced the stage of the theater which is available for big concert events, private affairs, weddings and smaller community functions. Site scouts have also used the interior for movies and photo shoots which included an episode of Luke Cage last year. An annex next door even has dance studios that nonprofits often use on a weekly bases at a special discount rate. Monthly movie screenings have also restored the movie palace to its original use and the schedule has been updated regularly on Harlem Bespoke. Those interested in the Unite Palace for any particular event should definitely check out the official website for more details: LINK
