Harlem Bespoke: The Pathmark on East 125th Street by Lexington Avenue had been hailed a big win for the community when it was built in the late 90s but the church organization that helped establish the supermarket sold everything for $39 million to developers 4 years ago. Apparently the parent company of Pathmark had planned to close the location because of bankruptcy proceedings but locals were not happy to hear that the community resource would be replaced by condos.
So what has been happening since? Doors officially closed in 2015 and permits had been approved the following year for a full demolition of the property that takes up an entire city block. We checked the DOB website and the demolition paperwork for 149 East 125th Street filed 2 years ago are the only permits that can be found. When a large building has been planned for a site, a lot of initial paperwork usually has to be submitted to the DOB and those do not appear to exist.
If everything works out, then 600 new apartments would arrive on the site but everything seems to have stalled. Legal issues with the sales transaction might be slowing things down and the overall status is still unclear for the ambitious development. More on the story can be found in our past post: LINK
