REMEMBER: BARBERSHOP IN THE HEIGHTS CIRCA 1961

Harlem Bespoke:  Dominican-born photographer Winston Vargas captured historic images of Washington Heights back in the mid century and the above barbershop photo reveals what one of the cultural institutions looked like back in 1961.  Isaac Montes Barber Shop appears to be more old world for the time period and even the bodega next door has window signage more apropos for a storefront in the early 1900s. We have not seen a lot of archival images from the Heights in the past but those who have the same interests should look up Mr. Vargas' work.   For a higher resolution view of this photograph, check out the official Smithsonian site: LINK
