Sunday, October 14th, 3:00PM-6:00PM, Fight in the Heights, The Incredible Story of Tom Molineaux at Morris-Jumel Mansion, 65 Jumel Terrace at 160th Street. See the 19th century boxing match recreation featuring the story of Tom Molineaux, a black man born into slavery and how he won his freedom through boxing, eventually moving to Great Britain.
Commemorating the sport of boxing’s arrival to these shores from England and the brief time that the Morris estate was converted into a tavern following the conclusion of the American Revolution, guests will witness a 19th century boxing match reenactment and learn the incredible story of Tom Molineaux.
A man of color born on a southern tobacco plantation in 1784, Molineaux made his made his way north and, through boxing, fought for his freedom.
Before and after the reenactment, guests will enjoy locally brewed beer and live music of the day. Reenactment portion is free. $20 for beer & tavern fare optional. For additional details, check out the Morris-Jumel Mansion site: LINK
