SEE: WHEN THEY SEE US ON NETFLIX
Harlem Bespoke: We were around the same age as the adolescents who were the accused during the Central Park Jogger case back in 1989 but have not been able to process this connection until Ava DuVernay's masterpiece of human emotion debuted on Netflix recently. When They See Us has the artistic poetry in the title that reflects much of DuVernay's aesthetics as a director but the 4-part film has a more tempered balance than usual. This reality in turn makes a more visceral experience for viewers and the 5 Harlem residents who were brutalized by the authorities into falsely confessing a crime they did not commit are finally seen as young, scared local boys.
When They See Us is an important film highlighting one of the most tragic cases in the city's long history but is also a testament of hope, family and love that is rarely seen when the media focused on this case 30 years ago. This heart-breaking series also introduces an incredibly talented cast of young actors that gives a soul to each of the boys portrayed. Every uptowner young, new or old should see When They See Us in order to remind us of what was and also what is still very true today.
