BESPOKE: ONE MORE PERFORMANCE OF THE BACCHAE

Harlem Bespoke:  Sunday's performance of The Bacchae will be the last one for the brilliant Classical Theatre of Harlem Production of the Euripides play which has now been transformed into a roaring rock opera.  Starting at 8:30PM at Marcus Garvey Park's amphitheater, the quick hour and a half production runs more like a blockbuster Broadway Musical such as Rent with a minimilist industrial stage but also has video panels reminiscent to those found at major stadium concerts.  This was an absolute change of pace this year and those usually trepidatious about seeing a slow Greek play will have a change of heart after seeing this contemporary translation of The Bacchae.

As with most Greek tragedies, we find a noble family in conflict with the gods and everything ends badly at the end.  This time around the immortal in question is the deity of wine and fertility known as Bacchus who has been transformed into the omnisexual god of sex, alcohol and rock n roll.  The son of Zeus also has his lustful female followers known here as The Bacchettes who gyrate on various tiers of the stage throughout the production and sing soulful interludes in between scenes.  Make sure to see the amazing finale tonight and experience something quite remarkable in theater that is free to the public.  More details on the Bacchae can be found in our past post: LINK
