FILM: GIMNASIO MOVIE SET ON ST. NICHOLAS
Harlem Bespoke: We walked by the vacant construction site on St. Nicholas Avenue just north of Harlem School of the Arts at 143rd Street yesterday and notice a crew on hand creating a couple of large murals. As can be seen from the above photos, a boxer's image has been painted on the side of the old industrial building with a very professional crew team at hand doing the work. Rivera Boxing and the Gimnasio are also written so we suspect this all might have to do with a movie posted as San Juan Hill (code name for West Side Story?) on all of the filming permits seen around town lately. This all makes sense but another painting on site is a little more puzzling.
Just south of the gym signage, a huge cutout mural has been constructed from plywood and shows a massive three tower development connected to the retaining wall in the back. The depth of the rendering seems all off since the lot is more shallow but everything else does look like a representation of the development site. Our guess is the film might tackle gentrification in the mid-century and use the lot as example in one scene. Last we heard anything about 655 St. Nicholas Avenue was when the old garage building had been demolished back in 2013 and a modern massive residential rendering was revealed: LINK

In The Heights has been filming just north of there for the last few days, on St. Nicholas Place between 152 and 155.
