GREEN HARLEM: GUCCI GOES CARBON NEUTRAL
Harlem Bespoke: As the city's populations grows, being green and sustainable has been a major concern in many communities on the local, industrial or commercial levels. Green Harlem is a new feature on Harlem Bespoke which will explore various options, plans and main users of the initiative for a more sustainable focus on how we live.
One of the more authentic eco-concsious move within the fashion industry comes from Gucci which has a custom boutique in Harlem with Dapper Dan and can be a great role model for pretty much everyone. The Italian based company has promised to go completely carbon neutral with a ten-year sustainability plan that tackles many of the extreme environmentally harmful practices of the fashion world. Using sustainable materials, less hazardous chemicals along with paper packaging instead of plastic are the more direct ways to makeover the business and an initiative has been set for air travel.
What is wrong with air travel? Aviation accounts for 12 percent of carbon emissions so setting up fashion shows which involves flying in models, production crew, staff, guests, samples and equipment is actually really bad for the environment. Carbon offset plans now comes into play since donating money to organizations that plant forests which will eventually absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere appears to be the way of the future. This is also an example for everyday air travelers since carbon offset dollars can be added to many flight tickets or airlines can arrange to do so for those who chose to fly frequently.
