CONSTRUCTION: UPDATE AT EAST 125TH PATHMARK

Harlem Bespoke: What is going on here? Anyone who has been around the block a few times by the old Pathmark supermarket on East 125th Street and Lexington knows that it was shuttered because of a big development deal back in 2014 and everything sold for $39 million. Community leaders had originally pushed for Pathmark to open at this location in front of the subway station entrance to revitalize the intersection and an opening in 1999 was big news for the struggling neighborhood.  With that said, the majority property shareholders (which happens to be a notable local church) surprisingly sold everything 14 years later to a developer with a reported goal of affordable housing within the mix of a 10-story tower.
Everything on the block had plans to be demolished based on permits posted on the DOB website back in 2016 but that paperwork has now been listed as Job Withdrawn as of April of this year.  Permits for the renovation of existing 1-story building had been filed this past August and a partial demolition permit for the site was just approved last month in early October.  As can be seen in the photo taken from this weekend, the corner section of the Pathmark building now has a rent sign up which further implies that at least part of the building will stay in place.  More on the backstory can be found on our past post: LINK
