EAT: NEMS AT PONTY BISTRO
Harlem Bespoke: We had the nem on the menu at Ponty Bistro over the summer and had to do some additional research on the asian dish. Did you know that a lot of French African bistros also serve Vietnamese spring rolls which are called nem on the menu? These delicious crispy rolls are stuffed with seasoned meat, clear noodles, wood ear mushrooms and often come with chopped shrimp mixed all together in the filling. The French colonial period included both Vietnam and West Africa so all the cultures combined in various ways. Legend has it that many Senegalese soldiers had Vietnamese brides who would then introduce the specialty to Africa. More on Ponty Bistro can be found on our past post: LINK
