Harlem Bespoke: It's back on the menu! The buzzed about fried chicken sandwich from Popeye's raised eyebrow when all of the stores ran out of the specialty within a couple of weeks when it first dropped at the end of August. Signs had to be put up in the windows announcing the absence on the menu but those changed this week and the coveted fast food fix for a reasonable $3.99 a pop has people lining up again.
We actually were really skeptical and thought it was all a social media ploy of sorts so decided to see what the big deal was about. Many waiting in line were nervous that the supply would run out again before reaching the window but that was not the case today. We got two orders for quality control observation and each one arrived individually contained in a heat insulating paper bag lined with foil. Then there is another layer of waxed paper that the actually chicken sandwich is wrapped in.
The first thing we noticed is that the generous buns were a bit mashed but then lifted sandwich from the bag. It was heavy. So the thing here is that the the big standout is that you get one large chicken breast that weighs literally like half a pound and has been fried with a perfect crispy crust. It definitely taste like a good chicken sandwich dressed accordingly with mayo and pickles but the sheer size of the breast is what is really hitting things home. Sandwich order number two also looked the same so things are probably weighed accordingly for consistency when these big boys are being made.
