DEMOLITION: TOWER REMOVED FROM ST. JAMES
Harlem Bespoke: Scaffolding went up last September in front of historic St. James church at the corner of 126th and Madison Avenue but renovations unfortunately were not the intentions. Everything had been sold to a condo developer in recent years and the the demolition process would start soon in the coming months. A Bespoke reader mentioned that the main tower has since been demolished so we walked over to this eastern section of Harlem over the weekend to take a look.
As can be seen from the above photos, the building is pretty much a shell now with only the walls of the lower levels still intact. At this rate, everything will be razed by the end of the month and one of the few grand old building left on the east side of Central Harlem will be no more. We have mentioned that the blocks above 125th Street just east of Fifth Avenue to Park Avenue still have the brownstone village feel to it but somehow has not been protected by the Landmarks Commission of the city.
