EAT: HEALTHY LIVING AT LYN GENET'S KITCHEN

Harlem Bespoke:  We finally made it over to Lyn Genet's Kitchen over on Broadway by 142nd Street this past week and learned a lot about healthier choices at this new eatery started up by the physically fit nutritionist who is also a New York Times best selling author.  Most diet rules have a one size fits all mentality but Ms. Genet-Recitas encourages eaters to see what works for them and not just follow the article of the day.  The menu focuses on good vegetables, proteins, fats, and carbs that balances the body and less on processed foods or using a lot of sodium.

Lactose intolerant?  The culprit is probably cows milk which is harder to digest so crispy Manchego cheese from sheep's milk is the better, whole food selection that is placed on the portobello mushroom burger that has the perfect fry technique. All the burgers actually are served on potato flour buns which causes less inflammation than regular flour.  Sourdough is also used as a bread ingredient in some of the other plates since it is easier to digest than regular wheat flour with less inflammatory properties.  Inflammation is a big word used here since a reason a lot of diets do not work is because of food reactions specific to each individual.

LG Kitchen also does not shy away from good proteins that are organic and minimally process.  The theory here is that fake meats with 50 ingredients are not a great nutrient source so natural is the way to go.  Those looking something hearty should try out the chicken parmisan which has a low inflammation tomato sauce with less acid than usual and served up with zucchini noodles that are probably the best presentation to be found for the low-carb classic.  Fish of the Day,  New York Strip steak, lamb burgers and chicken wings are also on the menu for diners who want a little variety in their natural proteins.

Vegetarians and vegans will also be happy with the menu since half of the menu has offerings for those looking for greener cuisine.  We had the vibrant tacos which were deconstructed in presentation which one puts together with the saucy bean filling and a bit of bright cilantro sauce at the end.  Other notable vegan options include Thai rice curry, a Tandoori burger and several soups such as the curry lentil kale offering. One of the vegetarian options that caught our eye was the seasonal greens with goat cheese fritter which we will definitely try at the next visit.

Wine lovers out there should also rejoice since a drink a day actually lowers stress-induced cortisol level in the body so there is a wall of Spanish wines to choose from.  A menu of cocktails with elixir ingredients such as green tea to boost the metabolism or cardamom to help lower cholesterol and lavender to promote calmness are all a good reason to stop by at the impressive bar after work hours.  A Happy Hour from Noon-7:00PM everyday is also available for those looking for a more pocket-friendly alternative. There are a lot of holistic remedies to learn about or just better ways to approach healthy eating at Lyn Genet's Kitchen and the notable dietitian is always available for those with any questions: LINK
