ARCHITECTURE: A MISSING BAY WINDOW REVEALED

Harlem Bespoke: Some might have assumed that the missing oriel bay window at 749 St. Nicholas Avenue by 147th Street would have been just a replica of the adjacent neighbors but additional online research has now proven this theory wrong.  Writer Ralph Ellison once lived here so the address has always been a brownstone of interest for the neighborhood.

The architect  apparently decided to mix things up a little as can be seen in the NYC public building tax photos taken from around 1940.  This actually makes sense since the middle townhouse also has a distinct arch that stands out and was constructed to break up the monotony of the block.  Everything is located within the official landmark district on Sugar Hill so maybe one day a proper restoration will take place.

  1. Yes - and maybe someday they will put back the original stoops as well. All of these buildings had stoops that were removed when they put the A train in. i renovated 737 st nick and did the research of what was there before putting the stoop back on - let me see if i can find the photos
