ARCHITECTURE: A PRESIDENTS TOMB IN HARLEM

Harlem Bespoke:  Architect John H. Duncan's iconic mausoleum finished in 1897 for famous Civil War hero Ulysses S. Grant who would become the 18th President of United States.  Grant's Tomb over by the cusp of Manhattanvile and Morningside Heights is also close to the famous Battle of Harlem Heights which occurred just few blocks away in 1776 during the Revolutionary War. The beloved President had a small tomb nearby in what would be Riverside Park during the construction period but would be moved to this grand monument at 122nd Street by Riverside Drive when all was finally completed at the end of the 19th Century.

Grant's Tomb has been restored in recent decades but is probably one of the most important landmarks of its time that a majority of modern New Yorkers have not visited.  Harlem's Jazz Mobile usually presents summer concerts in the main plaza and hopefully the community will get to enjoy this annual event once more this year: LINK
