REMEMBER: GEORGE WASHINGTON SLEPT HERE

Harlem Bespoke:  Did you know that George Washington had the Morris-Jumel Mansion by West 161st Street used as a headquarters during the Revolutionary War?  Washington Heights gets its name from the first president of the Unites States and the oldest house in Manhattan which was built in 1765 probably had a lot to do with it.  The British had taken over the southern sections of the island so the Continental Army was stationed further up north since there was no other option. Essentially the grand estate was put to used by the would-be Commander in Chief just a year after completion and was strategically crucial in winning the War of Independence.  This uptown heritage site on top of Sugar Hill is one of the few museums open this year and socially distant viewings can be scheduled on line to see the presidential rooms: LINK
