REMEMBER: HARLEM HOSPITAL SAVES THE LIFE OF MLK

Harlem Bespoke:  Did you know that Harlem Hospital on Lenox by 135th Street once saved the life of Martin Luther King Jr. back in 1958?  The famous civil rights leader was on a book tour and made an appearance at Blumestein's Department store on 125th Street when a mentally ill African-American woman stabbed a seven inch penknife into his sternum.  Bystanders held her back and it was soon discovered the attacker also had a small pistol also hidden within her undergarment.

Harlem Hospital was the closest medical facility and some smart decision making would save the 29-year-old preacher's life.  A thoracic surgeon who was the top specialist in Greater New York City quickly arrived to the hospital and the operation took 2 hours to remove the knife that was dangerously close to one of the main heart arteries.  Those famous photos of Martin Luther King in a silk robe with his wife are actually during recovery after the attempted assassination.
