CONSTRUCTION: THE SUGAR HILL HORSE STABLES

UPDATE:  The building is not being demolished.  Two additional towers are being added on top an the entire site will be residendtial.  So the current situation is just gutting the interior of the site to make way for new apartment renovations.

We are Harlem's longest running blog so have done quite a few stories on historic buildings in the past decade and wanted to check out on some of the previously reviewed sites.  Walking by the historic horse stable building at 455-457 West 150th this weekend, a dumpster was discovered out front with lots of construction material in front of the building.

Our initial reaction was that the address used as a car garage in recent decades was just getting much needed renovations but documents in the window tell a different story.  Apparently demolition restoration had been planned in the months right before the pandemic started last year so everything stalled until now.  The last photo has a rendering of a residential development which was slated to be completed in Fall 2021 but that will now probably be pushed back at least for another year.  This might be the largest intact former horse stable in Hamilton Height so it is shame to see it go and will be expanded upon for housing.  More on the historic address can be found in our previous post from 2010: LINK

  1. In reviewing the bottom image it appears that the construction sits behind the original facade (see cornice profile) with the same number of existing floors, with the 5th Floor addition being setback in what appears to make it none visible from the street. - John Reddick

  2. Is there currently any effort to get this building landmark status? I found this blog with a detailed history of the building as well: http://daytoninmanhattan.blogspot.com/2019/07/the-1896-f-w-espers-stable-457-459-west.html
