Harlem Bespoke: Historic Harlem churches that have official landmark status are thankfully protected from demolition which becomes a bit of a creative puzzle when the sites are sold. There are currently 3 notable houses of worship in the neighborhood that have been purchased or are up for sale which have this dilemma since end used will definitely be different.
Only the interiors may be altered in these scenarios so having a condo conversion is out of the question for the most part since there probably will not be enough units to make the investment worthwhile. Someone mentioned a grand gymnasium in the past and that could really be a cool workout space. Downtown churches have been converted to night clubs and shopping venues in recent decades also. A concert hall would also be amazing since the interiors are made for great acoustics. We also like the idea of a cultural center like a museum for the community. Anyone have any other ideas out there?
More music and performance space please!
