Harlem Bespoke: Someone on social media mentioned they did not call Amsterdam by West 140th Street a part of Hamilton Heights but this area by City College is within the official designation by Community Board 9 of West Harlem. Morningside Heights and Hamilton Heights are all up on three Harlem park hilltops and that is where the word
Heights come from. So if you are above any of the parks to the west then you are in one of neighborhoods with heights attached to it. A south border for Hamilton Heights starts at 135th Street and the north ends at 155th Street.
This is not to be confused with saying The Heights. The popular term always means solely Washington Heights which gets the name from being partly on the hilltop of Coogan’s Bluff just north of 155th Street. It’s a bit confusing but these boundaries are important if you go into community board meetings to try to get stuff done and also to just get around the neighborhood.
