ARCHITECTURE: A LITTLE ISLAND IN WEST HARLEM

Harlem Bespoke: Everyone is talking about new Little Island located downtown on the Hudson River by West 14th Street but Harlem had been planning for a similar public park for over a decade now. The old Marine Transfer Station just north of the West Harlem Piers on 125th Street is pretty much a floating island on the Hudson and efforts to make it into a green space has stalled for as long as we can remember.

One of the earlier proposals was actually to make the location into a farm and a ferry docking station which would bring in visitors on a daily basis.  Public parks are now at a premium demand these days and New Yorkers really want more of this sort of innovative outdoor space so Harlem's own version might come about in the near future.  Community Board 9 has been working on this for quite some time and funding is probably another major issue for everything to finally happen.  Read more about the Marine Transfer Station in our past post: LINK
