FORMER MOUNT MORRIS BATHS SPACE FOR RENT

Harlem Bespoke: We have been covering the history of the former Mount Morris Turkish Baths located on Madison just south of 125th Street for the past ten years and now the space appears to be up for rent again.  Everything went up for rent in 2010 and a martial arts studio took over the lease 5 years later.   Opened back in 1890 by a doctor living in the neighborhood, the steam room would eventually became a gay meeting spot by the Harlem Renaissance years and some famous black icons of the era have reportedly dropped by from time to time.  The facade has since had all of the original signage removed a while back and we took a few current photos this past week.

Our original opinion was that this would make for a great LGBT spot since the history is all there and this might eventually happen since any business can open up now.  Unfortunately the original signage is MIA but that can always be replicated off of old photos.  More on the legendary baths can be found in our past post: LINK
