Dune: We actually saw Denis Villeneuve's fantastic update on the world of Dune several times and this is the only blockbuster that has received a lot of award nods earlier in the season. Expect a return to Imax once the Oscars are announced but in the meantime some smaller screen are showing the breakout film in NYC.
Spider-Man: No Way Home: Probably the most pleasing film on the end of year list when it comes to Marvel movie fans and will easily be the leader in top ticket sales of the pandemic era by end of December. Lots of teens and families mixed in with enthusiastic adults at the afternoon screening this week.
West Side Story: We have to confess that we are not a big fan of musicals on the big screen but West Side Story was spectacular! There definitely is a reason for the is update especially after the cringey brown-face actors in the original. Additional lines were also added and everything is just stunning. Word of mouth will eventually make this a moderate success but ticket sales have been slow up to this point in time.
Eternals: Another Marvel entry that can sit as a stand alone film has more ambition than the usual formula favorite but that is what makes it so great. The most diverse set of leads and contemporary combination of character development with a more mythical storyline was polarizing to purist but what makes this one different really is what we loved about it. Academy award wilnner Choe Zhao directs Eternals and is another reason to go see this movie.
Matrix Resurrection: We just saw the new Matrix update this week at a preview and was generally pleased with the outcome. Although not a perfect film, the new entry is worth checking out if you have seen all the above on the notable big screen list.
