REMEMBER: TRAFFIC BELOW HIGHBRIDGE CIRCA 1903

Harlem Bespoke: The new Spider-man film now has an instantly iconic scene where bridges over the the Harlem River are the main arena. There is a lot of traffic involved and one can see the High Bridge and the landmark water tower in the background if you pay attention.  This all reminded us of the first film featuring the High Bridge over a century ago and we wrote about it previously as below:

A film clip from 1903 shows one of those famous day trips that uptowners would make to hang out on the High Bridge at 173rd Street and watch the parade of carriages below.  This vantage point is from the Manhattan side looking north at the original masonry arches that would eventually be replaced by a singular steel arc straddling the Harlem River.  The Bronx side of the bridge has 10 brick arches still in place so one can get a sense of what the original bridge looked like over a century ago.  After being shut off from the public for the past 40 years, the newly restored bridge is now ready to be an attraction for those seeking a local weekend getaway.
