RESTORATION: HISTORIC STEPS AT HIGHBRIDGE 2021

Harlem Bespoke: We always thought the dramatic steps on the Bronx side of Highbridge never were fully realized from the original 1800s rendering but it turns out that the architectural detail was hidden behind over a century of overgrowth and neglect.  A Bespoke tip arrived to our inbox this week which revealed the newly cleared out landscape and restored steps.

Our past visits have concluded at the top of these steps but we were kind of trepidatious about going further down into what looked like a heavily wooded area with not much light.  Now everything has been uncovered and the views are pretty darn dramatic in the bright daylight hours.  Highbridge is the city's oldest bridge which connects to roughly to the 173rd Street side of Washington Heights and the NYC landmark is open to the public for free all days of the week. Check out more photos from our past post of views from the bridge: LINK
