Harlem Bespoke: Uptown's oldest chocolate shop has been around since 1942 over by Columbia University at Broadway by 114th Street and was notably Hollywood legend Katherine Hepburn's favorite sweet spot in the city. The iconic movie star of yesteryear used to stop by frequently and pick up her favorites which included the pecan turtles, dark orange peel, butter crunch and dark almond bark. We stopped by this week and ordered the Hepburn mix and asked to have two pieces of everything in one of the beautiful gold print boxes. Otherwise everything is sold by the pound and can be selected a la carte. Past New York Times articles are also up on the front window which have been faded over time for those more curious of the past history. The interior looks like it has not been renovated since the 80s but the service is up to date and there is a big selection to choose from. There are also boxed sets of chocolate truffles for Valentine's Day so definitely stop by to check out this old school candy store. Most of the students in the neighborhood just walk on by because Mondel does not have a buzzy social media presence but those in the know in the neighborhood have kept the business going for decades.
