Harlem Bespoke: Everyone started not believing in Harlem and leaving in the 60s and onwards until recent decades but a waitress at the local diner on Lenox never gave up on the neighborhood. No banks in the city would lone the money to the aspiring black restauranteur so Sylvia Woods ended up convincing her mother to mortgage the family farm back home in order to borrow money to buy her place of work on Lenox by 126th Street. The rest is uptown black history in the making.
There is a lot of love on the walls of the eatery and we especially enjoy catching up on the nostalgia while picking up a lunch special to go at the counter out front. Photos from from over half a century are all documented with celebrity guests from Beyonce to Obama can be seen on any given day. Some might focus on the glamour but we cherish the more candid family photos especially the ones of Sylvia proudly posing at the oldest black-owned restaurant in Harlem that she started up almost 60 years ago. More on Sylvia's can be found in our past post: LINK
