☞ ARCHITECTURE: Tale of Two Firehouses

The above photos are not before and after shots of a Victorian firehouse but that of two very similar buildings in different nabes around Harlem. The first two images are that of engine house number 47 in Morningside Heights on (West 113th Street and Amsterdam) which pretty much looks as new as the day it was constructed. Going up further north and east on 125th Street, the shabby twin Ladder 14 can be found at the south side of the block right before Lexington Avenue. While the Morningside Heights firehouse has a fresh coat of high-gloss red paint, gold accents and hand stenciled letters, the neglected East Harlem house (lower three photos) looks dusty and neglected. There seems to have been some effort to mark the eastside house since some chalked-out lettering can be seen above the doorway indicating the company. We're not sure if Ladder 14 is still operational at this point since not much has been going on there in some time but it definitely has potential if renovated the right way as shown by its twin down south.

  1. I believe that ladder 14 has been shut down for many years now. I was shut down because of the poor city budget.
