☞ SEE: Triple Candie Studios
One of Harlem's most unique independent art galleries is located at 500 West 148th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue. Triple Candie Studio has a pretty non-descript storefront painted in black with only simple painted lettering to mark the space. They are only open from Thursday through Sunday and during the afternoon so folks really have to plan their day to check out the small exhibitions. Currently the show represents what was formerly Harlem's only privately owned African American wax museum with paper mache statues to represent the long lost wax sculptures. There are some key historic icons but our favorite has to be the sculpture of Harlem historian Michael Henry Adams on display with round spectacles and a bowler hat to boot. We will have more on the original wax museum in a later post. The closest subway station to this location is the 1 train at 145th Street. Photos by Ulysses.
