☞ REVIVE: Help Light Up 125th Street

Wednesday, November 10th, 6:00 PM-9:00 PM at Settepani.  Community Board 10 will have the entire length of 125th Street brighten with Holiday lights for December 2010 and folks can come help out by supporting the fundraiser this Wednesday at Settepani. Parts of the famous boulevard have been decorated for the season in the past but this year will have the lights shine river-to-river on Harlem's main street.  So stop by the Mount Morris Park Historic Districts pioneer Italian restaurant at 196 Lenox and 120th Street to help support a great cause! www.Settepani.com

  1. call me a grinch but I don't really see see stringing tacky (ok, just assuming they're going to be tacky but they usually are) holiday lights across 125 as a ‘great cause’.

  2. For the first time ever, I totally disagree with Sanou's Mom. I think it would be magnificent! At the very least, it would be nice to see some cheer uptown, no?

  3. If it good enough for Little Italy, its good enough for 125.

And in all seriousness it can't hurt. Seriously.

  4. Hey—I’m willing to be wrong. I’ve had a lot of practice at it. I suppose it depends on the way it's done, eh? Sad plastic candycanes and dismal Santas and such are so dreary and they seem to be the norm rather than the exception.

Would love to see some trees planted along the street, though. That would be year ’round cheer.

  5. I see Sanou's Mum's point. I saw something like this in Old Town Alexandria:

The Mount Morris Historic District neighborhood is more than capable of pulling it off. THAT would be a wonderful addition for the season.

  6. I agree it can't hurt - and I think little things can make a big difference in a neighborhood over time (things like clean streets, flowers, etc.). However, I'd note Settapani followed Piatto D'Oro so is not the first Mt. Morris Park area Italian - unless you don't count 19th/5th as Mt. Morris Park, but I sure do!

  7. Chris, I imagine this is more 125 BID than anything to do with Mount Morris other than that they are meeting at Settapani. And 125th Street, at least at street level, is pretty much an architectural wasteland. Jimmy Jazz, anyone?

    We shall see. . .

  8. Lighting the streets bring cheer, make you feel like Xmas and all in all do much to uplift the spirit of the community. It's like pets they make you feel good just by petting them even if they are not yours. It's the contagion effect. I do agree with Sanou that planting some trees and flowers along the different drives, would also be awesome. i think that Lenox Ave should be rivaling Park Ave with flowers, sculpture etc it has nice historic buildings for sure :)

  10. Hey there-
Although I am big time fan of Christmas and all the lights - I really have to wonder how practical this is and if it is really worth the cost and damage to the environment. Not to be a tree hugger - but I want to be able to still have snow at Christmas and while I enjoy Christmas lights....for all of 125th street to be lit up kind of seems excessive. I love Harlem dearly and the community feel, but I have to say I am against so much lighting (maybe it could be downscaled?)
