☞ READ: The Sartorialist Gives Harlem Its Props

In Monday's New York Post, the Sartorialist gave his approval of Harlem as one of the most stylish places in Manhattan to people watch. The fashion photographer and blogger, Scott Schuman, is one of the most influential people in the business and has been known to take snapshots of the best dressed folks around. Mr. Schuman recommends to go to Harlem on any Sunday, after church, for a look at some of the most fashionable New Yorkers. ☞ LISTEN: Sunday Gospel in Harlem

For those who are not even that religious, the Baptist Churches in Harlem are a big draw in Harlem on Sunday. Not only does the fashion photographer, the Sartorialist, think that Harlem church goers are the best dressed in the city, but hoards of Europeans also take over locals houses of worship to hear all the singing. We walked by the small Baptist church on West 125th Street this past Sunday, and a church member was turning away folks from the door since it was already packed inside. Crowds of about 50-100 people line up to see one of Harlem's best-kept secrets, most coming from Spain and France with some Brits thrown in the mix. West 125th Street tends to have lots of Sunday traffic since it is the main thoroughfare (most of these churches tend to be converted theaters or warehouses), but the avenues of ACP/7th Avenue and Lenox/6th Avenue have the more majestic religious institutions. Our pick would be the Abyssinian Baptist Church for those who want the quintessential Harlem experience. See the previous post on this iconic church: LINK

☞ BESPOKE: The Jazz Age Lawn Party 2011

We have been checking out the Jazz Age Lawn party on Governors Island for the past couple of years and those interested in seeing the culture of that era should note that this year's first event will be on June 25th and 26th. Harlem's own Dandy Wellington has been known to make an appearance along with Brooklyn trendsetter Ouigi Theodore. Fashion insiders such as the New York Time's own Bill Cunnigham and the Sartorialist will be on hand to document the event that has actually become a family friendly affair.

The general premise is that a big band is set up, a wooden ballroom floor unfolded and dance lessons are provided in the morning.  Folks bring their picnic gear and listen to jazz music, purchase food and drinks at the food stands or check out the parade of vintage cars on the lawn.  Dress etiquette is generally 1920s but a few folks show up in 1930s and 1940s looks.  The crowd has gotten a bit more diverse in the past couple of years so folks in Harlem should really represent and check this one out.  Click on images to enlarge.
