☞ WALK: The 3rd Avenue Tracks
Underneath the most southern end of the Manhattanville Viaduct, one will discover a clue to the city's public transit past. Several patches of exposed pavement reveal the underlying cobblestone and railroad tracks that eventually curve off before they are buried once again. These are remnants of a trolley system that eventually connected to 3rd Avenue, as the embossed manhole covers portend. The bottom photo is of the trolley system at West 23rd Street that lead to the ferry station to New Jersey. 125th Street had a similar station and trolley connection point.
Take the 1 train to 125th Street and walk west to the viaduct to see the tracks. See previous post on Manhattanville for the panoramic view of the ferry and trolley system: LINK
