☞ ARCHITECTURE: Harlem's Oriels

Oriels are not birds or cookies but rather the bay window structures that stick out the side of brownstones and row houses. Some prime examples are the above set on West 123rd Street, right off of Morningside Avenue, that have recently been restored. We remember seeing them earlier in the month as a bunch of jolie laide characters in the neighborhood who had more chipped and rusted parts than anything else. The blue is a nice accent color against the brown, and this set is a perfect example of how cast iron took over wooden constructions as the material of choice for add-ons. Of course, the more expensive way to do it is to actually use brownstone or limestone for one's row house, but the alternatives are just as handsome. Take the A,B,C, D train to 125th Street for a view.
