☞ REMEMBER: The 126th Street Factory Row
After all of the headlines today about the failed Citarella contract with the government, we were reminded of the actual factory row on West 126th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam. The dilapidated red factory building has the usual trees growing out of it since a roof has disappeared long ago from this pretty cool industrial space. The center photos show the far eastern side of the building connected to a rather picturesque clapboard row house. The lower photo shows the side of the factory today, which has the shadow of the house still imprinted on the side of the building. There is a gated make-shift parking lot where the houses once stood.
As for the factories, they were baking facilities for the Taystee Cake Company, and Citarella was to restore baking once more to this outskirt of Manhattanville. Yet while the retail store for Citarella is up and running on the 125th Street side of the block, nothing seems to be happening with the factories. If only the government could be creative and work out the issue with the owner to get this idea of manufacturing going again, Manhattanville might be able to restore part of its industrial past. To see the area, take the 1 or A,B,C,D train to 125th Street.
