☞ SLEEP: L. Hostels

What happens when a developer that owns a historic, romanesque style, red brick building in South Harlem, rushes into the luxury condo business at a time when the market hits bottom? In the case of 1961 ACP/7th Avenue, between 117th and 118th Street, the proprietor changes it into a sleek hostel for mostly savvy European back packers. The condo finishes (stainless steel appliances with granite counter tops) along with a patio deck are still there but the bedrooms apparently look like hostel quarters since they have plain perfunctory bunk beds. The closest subways are the 2,3 and B,C at 116th Street so getting around Manhattan is quite easy and the hostel's location is on the western boarders of Mount Morris Park with its growing cafe culture on Lenox Avenue. 1. Smart business move. I like the idea of recycling and making something useful for people in a concrete way.
