☞ SEE: The Harlem River High Bridge circa 1909
We are obsessed with the arches of the High Bridge and many artist have used the iconic structure as inspiration in the past also. The above painting is from Frederick Ballard Williams and depicts the High Bridge before the metal arch was installed as structural support in latter years. What is nice about the viaduct before the modern additions were added is that the immediate really does look like a Roman countryside scene or some pastoral setting in Europe. Today, there are highways and high rises that obscure this once bucolic scene. The water tower will be open to the public only on Saturday, October 10th at the annual Open House New York tours. Show up between 10:00 am- 4:00 pm at Amsterdam Avenue and 173rd Street. Take the C train to 163rd Street or the 1 train 168th Street. Read about the High Bridge in our previous post: LINK
