☞ ARCHITECTURE: Inside the Polo Grounds
We have seen many photos of the Polo Grounds that existed north of West 155th Street but not many close-ups of the actual structure. The above color postcard, circa 1905, shows the close-up of the upper tiers of the stadium and they are apparently quite decorative. The ornamental nature of the carvings, with the classical motifs look more like theater seating than that of what one would expect from a sporting event. Another point of interest is the high bridge water tower that can be seen at the upper right of the photo. Three versions of this stand was built on this sight until 1964 when the plot was taken over by the government for use in public housing. Click on photo to enlarge.
