☞ REMEMBER: The Carriages of Bloomingdale
Back when the various quarters of Harlem were broken down to regional villages, Bloomingdale was a popular town and thoroughfare. The above print by William Boell, circa 1869, shows the just elected President Grant on a road trip in what would now be known as Broadway. The Columbia University Morningside Heights campus would eventually be built on the most northern reaches of this former town, south of Manhattanville. Grant's Tomb would be later constructed about five blocks up from this location. The nearest subway stop today is the 1 train at 116th Street. Read more about this famous road and the curious house that still sits on Columbia University's main campus: LINK. Photo courtesy of NPL.
