☞ Architecture: 241 West 125th Street

The famous Victoria Theater has a not so famous building next to it that has been transformed beyond recognition. Mall architecture from the suburbs occasionally creeps into Manhattan and the store on 241 West 125th is a good example (last photo). The stucco facade with a faux architectural gable on top and big corporate lettering is an aesthetic that many folks see in the burbs and go to the city to escape. We had to do some digging to find past photos of the building as it was before all the alterations. The top photo is from the 1930's when the Victoria was part of the Loew's Theater chain. The building at 241 West 125th Street can bee seen at the far left with the Roxy clothing boutique sign out front. The middle photo (by Camilo Jose Vergara) shows the building still intact circa 1994 right before Jimmy Jazz took over the lease. The last photo, taken by yours truly, is what it looks like today. The closest subway to this location is the A,B,C,D at 125th Street. Click on all images for detail.
