☞ REMEMBER: The Koch Department Store
One of the grandest and oldest buildings on the commercial thoroughfare of Harlem can be found at 132-140 West 125th Street. The Koch & Company department store moved to Harlem in 1893 and would become the main shopping destination until the Depression years of the 1930's. The building was designed by William H. Hume & Son and still stands today across from the Adam Clayton Powell Building and the new H & M store right off of ACP/7th Avenue and 125th Street. The top photo from the 1930's shows 125th Street facing west, and one can see the Hotel Theresa on the next corner. At the far right of the photo are the row of prewar buildings that were demolished to make way for the previously mentioned government skyscraper. The nearest train to this location is the 2,3 or A,B,C,D train at 125th Street. Archival photo courtesy NYPL. Current image by Ulysses.
