☞ REVIVE: Kalahari Center Gets $2.2 Million
There's some good news for the green condo development known as the Kalahari, which is located on 116th Street between Lenox and 5th Avenue. Unable to get their promised cultural center up and going with conventional financing, the luxury condo complex has recently been approved to receive some $2.2 million in funding via Recovery Zone Facility Bonds by the city. The 18,000 square foot MIST cultural center will house an African-Latino fusion restaurant, performance spaces and media rooms to train students in post-production film technologies. Why is a restaurant getting a government subsidy?
ReplyDeleteSo apparently these bonds are from the federal stimulus package: www.recovery.ny.gov/Handbook/InfrastructureEconomicDevelopment5.htm
ReplyDeleteAnd they're paying for a restaurant and "media rooms to train students in post-production film technologies" ... in an apt. building ...
Are you kidding me? That sounds more absurd than the Bridge to Nowhere...
Investing in underdeveloped areas sounds like a great use of the stimulus to me. Especially since many people cite the lack of restaurants and amenities as a reason against moving to harlem. In addition, post-production film skills are very lucrative in today's increasingly visual world. From mass media to corporate clients to small businesses, video is used everywhere. We no longer have a manufacturing-based economy, so skills like this are a perfect way to arm the next generation with career skills.
