☞ WALK: Temple Healing From Heaven

Churches in Harlem either are converted old theaters or temples but often times some decidedly modernized structures can be found. The Temple of Healing From Heaven Church at 2535 FDB/8th Avenue use to be an A & P supermarket until it got the stucco treatment a few decades ago. The building now definitely stands out and probably dressed up the neighborhood when the surrounding blocks between 135th and 136th Street weren't doing so well. It's probably safe to say that regardless of one's personal taste, this building is undeniable unique. The closest train to this area is the B,C on 135th Street. Photo by Ulysses

  1. The history of this building is that it was an A&P in the 40's, it then was used a school(HARYOU ACT ACADEMY) for the Poverty Program called HARYOU ACT and then its final use as a Church.
