☞ WALK: William H. Johnson's Art Studio

The old Schinasi Cigarette Factory on 311 West 120th Street, between Manhattan Avenue and FDB, is a child care center today but what many might not know is that the famous African-American Expressionist painter Wiliam H. Johnson also had a studio within the building circa 1929. The self-portrait of the artist (top photo) was created at this period in time when Johnson, at the age of 28, returned to the States from a three year residency in Europe. The former factory was then a garage which apparently doubled as a studio for those so inclined to use the space for such ventures. Most of the windows, towers and original entrances of the building have been removed and there are no indications on the exterior of its historic relevance today. See what the building originally looked like in our post on the Schinasi Brothers: LINK. The closest train to this location is the B,C at 116th Street or the A,B,C,D station at 125th.
