☞ REVIVE: 77-79 East 125th Street
The formerly run down tenements next to the Corn Exchange Building seem to be having a better time at starting over than the East Harlem Landmark. It was only a year ago when the lower level storefronts were boarded up and the the facades looked as if they were to crumble at any moment (2nd photo). Number 79 which is right next to the Corn Exchange Building (top photo) has a freshly repointed facade, vibrant new paint and what might have been an interesting retail space. As of last week, a Wendy's sign went up on the plywood fence so nothing too exciting is coming along. Number 77 still needs a fix up on the top levels but a dollar store just open on the renovated lower retails space. In this economy, its good to see that they at least are getting fixed up. Thanks once more to Harlem Bespoke reader Thomas for the tip. This location on East 125th Street is between Madison and Park Avenue and the closest subway is the 4,5,6 at East 125th Street. Great to see things going into these formerly abandoned spaces. The 99 cent store seems to be doing well. Any word on the building that used to house the Covenant House a couple doors down? It's another 4 story retail/walkup that may be in good enough shape for a new tenant but the signs up last I noticed seem to indicate that it's for sale and a "development site" w/ however many SQ buildable... it's the small, simple projects that are getting done in this economic climate.
