☞ EAT: Taking a Closer Look at 5 & Diamond

New York Magazine's Grub Street blog has posted some interior shots of 5 & Diamond for those who can't make the soft opening today on FDB and 112th. We also forgot to mention yesterday that chef Ryan Keen's signature burger combines beef cheeks, flap steak and pork fatback, and he will be bringing it uptown with this restaurant opening. See more photos on the New York magazine site: LINK or read about 5 & Diamond in our past post: LINK.

  1. I've tried passing by today and yesterday. Sadly, they are now having to compete with a new construction site two doors down which appears to be long term - possibly another condo building. This is an unfortunate blow for a soft opening as workers are directing passerbys to cross the street at the corner as they are laying the foundation.

It is very likely that restaurant will have to battle dark uninviting shadows of scaffolding in it's early fledgling stage.

  2. ...on a brighter note however, this new construction and restaurants is pretty much the norm for the South area of Harlem. If you strolled down Frederick Douglass Blvd during the day, below 125th street you would think that the year is 2005 or 2006.

What's more extraordinary is that anyone would guess that with all this new construction the outcome would most certainly end up in overstock and the need to convert condo plans to rentals given the economy. The opposite is true. This one corner is prevailing like 'The Little Engine That Could' and is continuing to move their property with fare market value prices.

One example is that of a new building one block north of 5 & Diamond on FDB. That new building went on the market less than one month ago and already has 40% under contract with sales prices at $744 per sq. ft.

South Harlem = "The Little Engine That Could." (Yes, Ulysses...feel free to use that :-)

  4. My husband and I had dinner at the 5andDiamond this evening, and the food was fantastic! As posted above, the place had a great vibe. The music was not too loud, the service excellent, and the place was packed. I live right around the corner and am so happy to have such a quality place to eat so close!
