☞ ARCHITECTURE: 110 West 127th Street

A reader wanted to know more about 110 West 127th Street and we did a bit of digging to find out about the condo complex located between Lenox and ACP/7th Avenue. The modernist building looks a little like it was designed by a New Wave architect from Miami back in the 1980's but the two duplex building was built in the past couple of years. There apparently was a brownstone on the 16 foot wide lot that was filed for demolition sometimes back in 2001. Fast forward to 2005 and new plans are set in motion to get a new structure on the plot. The two duplex units then sold sometimes in 2008 when the building was completed. The original landowner probably thought the lot was worth more than the original building and thus did away with the brownstone before the market took off. It definitely is kind of quirky but do folks like the design? Photo by Ulysses.

  2. Building is way out of character for 127th.. However, maybe the architectural diversity is beneficial to the neighborhood's character? Only time will tell.

  3. out of place - not consistent with the architecture of the block.

  4. Posting #1 here: I don't agree that architecture needs to be consistent as long as it is well-designed and executed. I think juxtaposition can be beautiful and interesting, however in this case it is terrible.

  5. Agreed, contrasting styles can work if done well, unfortunately that is rarely the case, most often it seems jarring styles just for the sake of being different is the norm. I wish architects could accept their limitations and if they are not up to creating something both dissimilar and beautiful within the given environment, then work with what is already there. This building being prime example.
